Camp Blount Historic Site Association has received approval by the Tennessee Wars Commission to move forward with a local effort to beautify the area around the Joseph Greer cabin at Camp Blount in Fayetteville. The project is known as the “Greer Cabin Beautification Project.”

Barbara Faulkner, who is spearheading the beautification project along with Sharon Guntherberg, said plans are coming together for work to begin soon. The group was waiting until after the Fourth of July weekend.

Faulkner said selections have been made including the rock landscape edging, weed control fabric, and dirt and compost mixtures.

“We want members of our community to feel a part of it by sharing bulbs and cuttings native to Tennessee,” Faulkner said. “Iris (the official Tennessee State Flower), daffodils, bergamot (bee balm), Black-eyed Susan, creeping phlox, asters, and hydrangea are all good candidates.”

Faulkner said, “Native plants play crucial roles in Tennessee’s ecosystems, offering food and habitat for local wildlife, creating a landscape resilient as local habitats for bees, butterflies, and birds. We encourage all locals to be a part of it by bulb sharing and donations.”

The Tennessee Wars Commission said in the letter to the Camp Blount Historic Site Association and Association President Colin Wakefield, “Thank you for working with the Tennessee Wars Commission to ensure our Civil Wars battlefields and war-related historic sites are preserved to perpetuity.”

Those willing to volunteer some time to help with the planting or maintenance, should contact Faulkner at 931-625-7340 or Guntherberg 931-227-8964.

“An invitation is extended to the talented members of the Fayetteville Garden Club to be a part if time allows,” Faulkner said. “We know you already are involved in beautification efforts at the Fayetteville/Lincoln County Museum and Stone Bridge Park and do an excellent job, so we would like for you to be involved.”

Donations earmarked for the projects can be left at Lincoln County Register of Deeds Randy Delap’s office in the Lincoln County Courthouse or made by accessing http://www.campblount.com, donate.

“Mark your calendars for Sept. 26 (School Day) and Sept. 27 (Public Day) and plan to attend Camp Blount Volunteer Days,” Faulkner said.

Camp Blount is located at 1124 Huntsville Highway in Fayetteville.
