Shaking
the roof. Unfortunately, authentic white oak shakes that were made
were not available in the amount needed to completely cover the Joseph
Greer House. A composite shake is being used, which has a 50-year
warranty and is fire-resistant. With the composite shakes and the
chimney caps, fire from the fireplace sparks is mitigated. You can also see
the clay chimney liner in the chimney cap image, another safety
addition. The chimney liner is also another safety precaution applied, which was not in the original house.
The roof is sheeted with 7/8th inch thick poplar planking and is overlaid with construction wrap to ensure water repellance. The shakes are then lain on top of the wrap.
