Up go the Walls

Most of the logs used in the reconstruction were collected and stored near the reconstruction site on concrete blocks, so they would not be in contact with the ground. They were covered had lats lain between them to allow for air circulation and were covered with a heavy tarpaulin. Other logs were bought from local sawmills, which were very enthusiastic about helping with supplying logs for the effort. A special log purchase for shingles will be discussed later.

To ease their installation, a systematic sorting process was carried out, categorizing them based on their designated positions in the structure. Subsequently, the logs were carefully arranged in the correct sequence on the ground. Any logs that needed replacement due to decay or unsuitability were found and set aside to serve as templates, and in some cases, decayed portions were cut out and the timber used for other purposes.

For the replacement logs, locally sourced logs were obtained. The floor sleepers were cut from Red Cedar, a plentiful and insect-resistant species. With the original logs as precise guides, these new logs were meticulously fashioned to replicate their predecessors. The fabrication process followed these steps:

1.    Carefully select a log of suitable width.
2.    Cut the log to the proper length.
3.    Transfer the measurements of notches from the original log onto the replacement material.
4.    Cut new half-dovetail notches in alignment with the specifications.
5.    Apply broad axe marks to match the original markings, ensuring visual consistency.

As the walls go up, you can definitely see the two pens (left and right) with the "dogtrot" in the middle.  The puncheons are not yet secured in place.  Six Puncheons are the "floor sleepers in each pen, and four puncheons are part of the "dogtrot" floor.

All proceeds from the sale of the "House of the Messenger" support the Joseph Greer Chapter and the Tennessee Society, Sons of the American Revolution. The funds will be allocated to historical and educational programs dedicated to the founding principles of the republic and the Constitution of the United States.
